This will be fun. I didnt even take this one apart and I’m going to tell you how to do it. If I get something wrong, could the person who did take it apart correct me? If you do make a big deal about it, because I am rarely wrong…
Here we go!
There are screws all over this camera, so make sure you take the time and remove them all before you try to take the covers off!
These are both covers.
This is a section of cover from the side of the camera, take it off!
Here it is, the inside of a camera, now, since this is a sensitive device, be careful!
When you remove the magical glowing screws shown above, and disconnect the clip (which is also glowing magically and has its very own arrow!)
Now you can fold the screen down, like so.
More screws. Lose em. Also watch out for the clip, as shown by the arrow.
Look! Another arrow! Watch the circled clip. You dont want to bend or break anything!
Now be careful and disconnect all of the ribbon cables.
On the front, you will notice more ribbon cables, disconnect ‘em. If you dont know how, look below. If you do, pat yourself on the back and buy yourself a soda, you’ve earned it.
By now you should have totally disconnected the lens from the rest of the body.
On the back, there are more screws holding ribbons in place, so go wild, and unscrew them.
You can remove the base plate, but be careful, and watch for any screws!
More screws to remove, and another clip.
Remove the screw noted above.
Look at what this arrow is pointing to and use your best judgement as to what to do here.
Find the hidden arrow, win a prize! The prize is advancement to the next step. Yippee!
Good Work, this was a tough one.

suppose am to do it at home and as you can see these devices have some thing about memory that I just don’t understand will I expose it to interference I mean the magnetic media there in ?,and before am to do anything could you pliz put it back together before I go nuts.
why would you want to take apart a camera? it’s not like you can mod them or anything :S
you ask why? curriosity.
Uhhhhh…. You might want to put a disclaimer or two in here about avoiding the built-in flash’s high voltage capacitor. Otherwise, some unsuspecting disassembler will get the shock of his life! Unless that’s what you intended in which case, sorry to spoil the punch-line, carry on.
You could hv sent the camera to me instead of risking it for that
Could you post the disassembly of the lens itself ? I did be interested to see how the zoom works. I had a camera with a bit damaged zoom mechanism, disasembled it but i could not properly put it back again
It was just that it’s one of the three pointers inside(on which the lens rotates) was broken.
Hmmm… I put text with each photo in the Wiki for this camera. Not sure why it didn’t make it here. Glad you all enjoyed the photos - I took apart this used camera to clean out some crud and just kept going as far as I could without breaking something. Now it works fine!
I have to wonder how much of this is assembled by hand since the details are so small. Then again if the unit was assembled in a country where the workers made $20/hour and not $3 a day, the prices of the equipment would be astronomical. Great work. Can you take it down some more?
Very neat but id rather keep and use it for pictures and videos, does this camera shoot in apple quicktime format if it even does videos
Suppose Someone follow your advice, but, he cannot assemble the camera again, that is funny!
I just did this very process in an attempt to fix a mechanical problem i was having with the camera lens of my sony dsc-p9 binding while closing. it turns out that the problem was more severe than i thought. . . so. . . anyone know of or have a decommissioned dsc-p9 that i can swipe the optics from? as an aside: this is a great camera and i have been extremely pleased with its preformance and the pictures i have taken with it over the past 3 years. just felt i should try to fix it at least before i have to settle on going out to get a new digital camera.
My camera’s (Cybershot DSC-P9) lens got broken when some one sat on it while it was switched on. So it’s not the lens which is broken but it’s some thing inside which prevents the lense to automatically come out when i shitch on the camera, in other words, if i jerk the camera towards lens side, it comes out cause it’s lose.
I took it to sony workshop, and they quoted it US$ 200/-, i have many things to say against them but it’s not the right place.
So any other solution?? What i am thinking is to disassembel it and see if i can get the broken spare part from net.
Help will be highly appreciated.
Regards
These are very nice instructions. In fact, they are the only instructions for any camera I could find on all the internet! I had a Sony DSC-P150. All the -P series are similar in shape. It was kinda different, but the instructions did help.
My camera worked before, but the lens was filthy. I opened mine less than the instructions did, and put it back together, precisely the right way. Oh gosh, I’ll never do that to good cameras again. The screen and electronics work, but the lens moves in, out, stays out, and the screen has an error code. I looked it up in the manual: There is a problem with the lens. NUTS! It might be one of the micro-wires was broken, it might be a shorted chip. Poor camera.
Absolutely brilliant. My DSC-P9 has suffered a lens mech fault and whilst i had got a far as picture 11 on my own i was struggling to get the connectors apart. This document then showed me how to go a step further in actually getting the lense off. Unfortunately the lcd panel doesnt seem to simply pull off and the photos in this document seem to be contradictory? Picture 12 of the display shows the leads with the connectors intact and yet picture 19 seems to shoe the connectors on the circuit board minus the cable? Unless I’m missing something it would suggest that picture 12 is of a replacemnet part and not from the camera in the shots? I dont want to pull the connectors any harder than I have. Oh and by the way I did keep getting nipped by a small electric shock which i guess might be that capacitor womeone mentioned?
be care full of the flash capacitor 15,000 v shock (low ma) kant kill but hurts for weeks and gives you two lovely white blisters(i speek from experience.
I could use that speaker seen on the third photo from the bottom
Is there a way to hook up a old camera lcd to a computer an use as a small monitor
hey, im having the same problem but with a sony-cyber shot DSC-W30 witch is a new model, and i wanted to kno if you think i could fix mine the same way?
did you discharge cap
can we use the lcd for mini tv?
lol…..nice
I’m trying to repair a DSC-P7 which is very similar to P9. But I have no idea on how to disconnect the ribbon cables as shown in pictures 13 and 14. Could somebody provide some detail instructions on this?
i have a sony cybershot like this one, i was taking pics and then i droped the camera (i know stupid) with the lens out, i picked it up and the lens got stuck and dont come in or out, i turn it on and you can hear the mechanism trying to pull the lens and then it says to turn the camera off and on, is it expensive to repair this???
