I doubt that I am the only one who has ever had this problem, but at least three times now, little plastic stabilizers on the “#2″ trigger buttons have broken off and rattled inside the controller. This wouldnt be that bad if the newly dislodged pieces didnt get stuck behind the triggers themselves. So here is the much desired disassembly of the Playstation 2 (PS2) controller:
Lets TIA!
Once again, all you need to know is on the back.
Start taking these screws out.
The shell should come right off once the screws are removed.
You can start unscrewing the screws holding the PCB in place.
You can also take the trigger covers off now.
Now just lift the PCB and plastic case right out!
As shown in the pictures below this part can get a little unwieldy, but the most important thing to remember is to not let the vibration motors dangle, or the wires could break, and turn this disassembly into a solder job. Not cool.
Lets go and take off the rubber trigger points, and the buttons from the inside of the controller. In case you were wondering, the little plastic star piece holds the buttons in place, and can just barely be seen sitting under the blue D-pad.
You can disconnect the plastic circuit board from the trigger joints.
I dont recommend doing this, but I was curious and folded up the plastic CB and it came right out of its white plastic case.
You can pop the thumbsticks right off.
Nice!

You can take it apart, but can you put it back together and have it work?
Its mine, I took it apart for the site, and im proud to say that it works just fine!
Wots the purpose of taking it apart? I prefer to diagnose a problem and solve it by taking it apart and repairing. would there b any tips on this? how to repair ur PS and accessories?
its amazing im ready with my ps2 and screwdriver
well, there wasnt really a purpose of taking it apart this time, there have been a few occasions where i had to take it apart to remove little tabs that had broken off inside and were getting jammed behind the triggers. This site serves as a utility for those who are wary of taking apart their expensive electronics, and want to see the proper way of doing it so as not to damage it by missing a screw hiding behind a sticker, or prying something open where it should be slid open instead…
Great… Now can you show me how to make an adapter… say PS2 to Xbox and vice versa? Or PS2 to USB?
Cheers!
very nice.
Totally Cool thing!!
cool! I’m going 2 buy one, so I can take it apart!
It would be nice to include some commentary along the lines of ‘Take care when removing ‘x’ as it’s easily snapped’ or ‘remember to engage x into y with a ‘click’ during reassembly otherwise the cover won’t fit’ or ‘this bit is removed by pulling - do not twist or the spindle wll snap’ etc.
Pics are nice but show no specific handling techniques or actions - words can convey much more useful information.
What was the point to take it apart?? My friends and I have done this a couple of times to try and fix the L1&R1 buttons, when the little bits snap off and rattle in your controller; making them obselete for many games. Trying to solder the bits back on, which only works temporarily is a pain. If anyone knows of a more perminant way to fix the fragile L&R keys without having to fork out for another controller…again, please tell.
Guys never question art. Sometimes somethings are done just for fun, and respect that ^_^
This can be helpful if you ever have a problem, now you know how to take it apart. Thanks DoYouTia
Have fun
ReALLy CooL! But I think I have to buy PS2 to do this thing! 0′,)
salam
i know rthat already i took ps2 controller apart by myself
but this is helpful to many pplz i m sure about it
you people should realize that ”just like a car wears out it’s tires”, game controlers need replacing from time to time. and add it to the cost for gaming. D.
Very cool but when I was taking the pad apart I found one little object I wasn’t sure of where to put it back!
It’s a piece of hard plastic shaped like a tripod. Help please? The joypad still works but it would be a shame if that little piece has a function and I’m not aware till I find out the hard way…
my wire got cut in half ,tryed strippoing and reconnecting the llike wires but it didn’t work anyone have a suggestions
i took my ps2 apart but the when the blue and green lights wasent working it was disconnetid
hey i have a problem with my ps2 controller, I usually play socom 3, and whenever im moviing around with the joysticks the guy keeps wanting to move right. im not sure if its dirty or what.
any help would be great.
lal i took it apart and sprayed it gold. now i have my own pimped controller. pretty neat huh
hi all. now my problem is a little worse.. than any other here. my controller wire was malefunctioning on one place in the gamepad inside..now i had to cut it because i’m sue that there was the problem.. however.. the gampead wire.. got 8 little wire-s.. and its a pain in the ass to put them together..i took of the part where the 8 little wire-s go into the gamepad {in a white thing ,srry cant expalin it better im not eng or us..)
and put the wire-s where they just shoul be (all collors on the same place where they where of corse) however.. my ps2 just dont detects my contorller..that if it where no power in it. is it possible that i have not seen the whire which gives it power..? note that ps2 controllers wire got 8 little wires in it, all different collor.. and i have put them on the right place where they belong.. but now its af it it doesnt get any power. i would apreciate a smart answer..
I dont totally understand what you said, but if you cut a wire and now it doesnt work, then its the wire. If you cut the wire, tested it, reconnected it, and now it doesnt work, than you most likely burned out something on the inside. For example, if you cut the wire that happened to be the Ground, then ran it, it would burn out the first chip it encountered. Buy a new one, they are cheap, even cheaper are third party ones, like mad kats or pelican.
Heey, i just took mine apart and now i can’t put that little plastic star piece that holds the buttons in place back on. Can you show me how to do it?
Greets
MJ
Thanks came in very handy for my son and I, the darn little white four way what the heck is it for fit very nicely in the place you showed in one of your pictures
Good one, fixed my R1 trigger by filling in the damaged rubber with some paper though getting that star piece back in place is a pain in the arse, just can’t get the D-Pad feeling the same.
Thanks this might help me figure out what i needed to know about muy brothers PS2 controller.
Also for the guy with the star peice problem on the D-Pad. I had a broken one so i left it out and the controller seems to work better then with it in my opinion. To put it back in you put the D-Pad back into place and the star peice fits into the groves or slots on an angle so it resemples an X.
as a matter of fact, i had this problem myself, thanks for the help
do you think you can show uis how to put it back toghether cause I tried like five times
hey tescoes how did you fix the R1 controller.. where’d you put the paper.. i’ve got the same problem and took it apart fine but don’t know where to go from there?
hey - that was really useful - we took thisthing apart - fixed the broken rumble motor vracket and got it all back together and working… comment - the little dodad that goes under the D Pad was a bear to figure out - thankfully one of your images showed it poking out i=under the rubber thingy
good but also show how to repair ps2 stupid……
hey my cotroller broke at the plug,i see that a few little progs are missing can i fix it
well can you also fix the analog sticks if they are stuck
want to try to swap l&r y axis on thumbsticks (prefer legacy control configuration for 1st person shooters) need to know which wire does what. the wires in older controllers were labelled with their function where they joined the circuit board, new controllers do not have these labels. I did this operation previously with a generic control pad, worked a treat. However ps3 controlpads are completely different inside. So i wish to rewire a ps2 control pad then run it through a ps2 to ps3usb adaptor. Generic controllers do not run properly through these adaptors so i need to rewire a ps2 controller. Do you know which coloured wire does what?
i toke mine apart then put it back togeter gain and it still didnt work then when i tried taking it apart again it screws didnt turn so i snaped the back part of it into 2 peices
Damn, I took mines apart and did exactly what you did. My R1 button is alright. But the problem is THE DAMN CONTROLLER DOESN’T WORK. WTF. All that hard work for nothing! BULLSHIT.
I HAVE NO SCREW DRIVER THAT SIZE!!!!!! IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE???????
Hello there,

My son (4 years old) killed my left analog stick. your site was very helpful… thanx
This website is cool! Oops. Anyway, MY controller’s left side—- except the left analog thingy and the select button—- is totally not working. What do I do, people???????
I am only a kid.
i used this to take my controller apart cause some of th buttons were sticking, after cleaning all the points they stil are, so i guess my controller is being ghay owell, thanks for the guide but its pretty simple to do realy
Any suggestions on how to fix the round O button on the controller. It does not work. should i just get a new one?
My method is faster and it has the same results in the end. SLAM IT STOMP IT TRASH IT. Because in the end will the thing work anyway? lol
Thanks for this, I wanted to get a visual scope on what to expect, and make sure I had the right idea in mind before actually going about it. Had to do tend to a little bit of d-pad—and the general area around same—tidying.
My controller looks like this
Any advice? Plz respond plus i need help with the analog stick also the screws have 2 of them on the back so it might be a little more tricky can anyone help me?
my r1 and r2 button seem to be picking up the x and triangle button anyway to reverse this when i push r1 or r2 it either backs out or confirms the action. any ideas how to fix it.
where is the Y button on ps2 controller??
thanks dude you saved my ass on fixing my ps2 controller i had to take the damn thing apart to replace a part in it cause my stupid sister dropped it
I had the same problem of something stuck inside the “X”, but after riassembling now my joystick power off randomly.. awwwww (and I think I broken the screws too)
Great! Just what I was looking for… the photos are excellent! Haven’t tried yet but it I’ll be at it this weekend and will re-post with results (in my case, I actually am trying to get a non-functional L2 button to work) In any case, thanks for the walkthrough.
nice job … but wish if you shown in one of the pictures the color order of the wire cable .. my kid got the gamepad wires detached from the board ,, so I need the wiring color order to re-attach them again,, if anyone know plz send me …. thanx
Very useful pictures, couldn’t figure out where the cross underneath the d-pad went until I saw this.
Also, does anyone know where I can get the pads that go underneath the buttons? Above, they’re the green and light orange-ish rubber pads with the black spots on the underside (I also need the start/select/analog pad).
