My Macbook Pro spill story....

I have a very new Macbook Pro with a Penryn processor with the new keyboard update...early 08 model (no enter at the bottom, no numeric keypad when fn is held, and F3-F12 all changed, no pg/home/end on arrow keys, no more apple key, etc).

Well I am at my inlaws and my sister-in-law spills coffee on it...quickly turned it off, let it dry, and waited 24 hrs... turned it on and had a few problems... delete no longer worked, eject key did not work and would wake it from sleep to try and eject on occasion, and last u worked but not left-shift-u, while right-shift-u still worked.

Ordered a new keyboard, and the mis-delivered the wrong one. It is the old one for pre-Penryn, Started looking closely, the only difference is the keytops themselves. So I get to thinking, there is no way that apple is going to pay for a complete redesign of the hardware for these changes, only the firmware and keytops.

After inspect numerous pictures on ebay and this guide, I decided to take a chance. Took it apart, put in the older model, put it back together, and no problem-works like a charm. Took about an hour to switch all the keytops that are changed, and I am typing on it right now.

Later, I ended up changing all of the rest of the key tops. I noticed that the Penryn version keys where just a very very slight shade different and smoother. Of course that could be the oil from my hands...who knows.

So hope this helps someone someday! Oh, and I found that if you use a narrow jeweler's screwdriver to pop the white plastic from the keys, it will get the harder keys off. Remember, the top row pops off on the left side, and the arrow keys pop off on the right side, all others on the top.

The guide looks good, but I only need to take the space bar off and clean the stickyness under, everything else is working... was a minor spill. Can I just click off the space bar key or do I have to take it apart? Response highly appreciated!

Hey do you know how to fix the little plastic hinges (suspensions?) directly under the keys? I had to remove a few of them, and while most of them are working fine, I managed to pop the center plastic piece out from the surrounding ones on a few keys on my MBP keyboard. I can see there's a small piece that just has to be popped back, but i'm not really sure about how to go about doing that. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hey man, just wanted to thank you for this article. I just switched two keys on the keyboard of my sister in law's german macbook pro to be more fit with what we use in Brazil.

cheers to you!

This broke my O key even more thanks... typing is so much nicer now that my o is even more different than my other keys. You see a macbook pro key is a rather subtle system. It's very fragile when opened. Very... there are various small plastic pieces, smaller than a cubic millimeter, that keep the hinging mechanism underneath in balance. It turned out there was a small breadcrumb under my keyboard. More than sufficient create a lever effect on the cubic milimeter, and as I exerted only a minute bit of force I barely noticed that my O key hinge point broke off. Bottomline is that my O key is now on my keyboard titled and typing is much more annoying now, as the entire resistance of that one key is off. I also looked at the ±§ key and guess what, it also broke. Fortunately that key is just unimportant but the bottomline is;
